Osaka
Japan’s kitchen, and the castle that decided a country

¥100,000
per day · guide only · car optional at ¥300,000

Osaka is loud, warm and completely unpretentious — the antidote to a week of temples. We spend the morning where Toyotomi Hideyoshi united the country, and the evening eating standing up in Shinsekai with someone who can order for you. The subway does the moving; your guide does everything else.

A day in Osaka

A starting point, not a script. Every stop can be swapped, dropped or lingered over on the day.

08:30

Pickup

From your hotel in Osaka, Kyoto or Kobe.

09:15

Osaka Castle

The keep, and the cyclopean stones of the outer wall that nobody photographs and everybody should.

11:00

Sumiyoshi Taisha

One of the oldest shrine styles in Japan, predating Chinese influence. The arched bridge is 400 years old.

12:30

Kuromon Market

Lunch grazing — uni, wagyu skewers, fugu if you are brave. Halal and vegetarian routes exist too.

14:00

Choose your afternoon

Kobe beef teppanyaki, a sake brewery in Nada, Nara’s deer an hour away, or the Umeda Sky Building.

16:30

Shinsekai & Tsutenkaku

Showa-era Osaka, unchanged and unbothered. Kushikatsu, and the one rule: never double-dip.

18:00

Dotonbori after dark

Neon on the canal, the Glico man, and a walk through Hozenji Yokocho’s stone alley.

18:30

Drop-off

Hotel, Kansai Airport, or Shin-Osaka.

Do you need the car here?

No — guide only is enough

Osaka is compact and its subway is excellent. Guide-only is plenty; take the car if you are pairing it with Nara, Kobe or Koyasan in the same day.

Getting there

A 2h30m drive from Nagoya, or we start from your Osaka or Kyoto hotel.
