Nara was the capital before Kyoto was a plan. The Great Buddha has sat in the same hall for thirteen centuries, deer bow for biscuits in the park, and by four in the afternoon almost every visitor has gone back to Osaka. We stay for the lanterns.

No — guide only is enough
Nara Park is one continuous walk and the train from Kyoto or Osaka is easy. The car matters only when you add Horyu-ji, which is genuinely awkward by bus.
A 2h20m drive from Nagoya. Often combined with Kyoto or Osaka over two days.
Best in autumn. The Kasuga lantern festivals (early February, mid-August) are extraordinary.

Ken guides a handful of days each month and no more. Kyudo 4th dan, calligraphy 6th dan, yabusame rider — the day is his practice, not a performance of it.
One flat price for the group — not per head. Two of you or six of you, the day costs the same.
Multi-day journeys are ¥300,000 per day, plus the guide’s accommodation (¥15,000–¥25,000 per night, at cost). Beyond 10 hours, ¥15,000 per hour.
